Job Description

The Coordinator of Adult Education provides leadership, oversight, and coordination for all adult education programs within Orange-Ulster BOCES. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive adult education services that meet the diverse needs of adult learners, including Practical Nursing, basic education, high school equivalency preparation, English language learning, workforce development, and career readiness programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Leadership & Management Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive adult education programs and services

  • Oversee curriculum development and instructional design for adult learners
  • Partner with business leaders, industry associations, and community stakeholders to assess workforce demands and develop responsive educational pathways that align adult learner outcomes with high-demand career opportunities
  • Manage program budgets, resources, and facilities effectively
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing adult education
  • Oversee and implement local and federal grant funding

Staff Supervision & Development

  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate adult education instructors and support staff
  • Provide professional development opportunities and ongoing training for staff
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment
  • Schedule classes as student enrollment and staffing changes occur
  • Assist with the hiring and evaluation of all staff
  • Develops procedures to monitor teacher paperwork
  • Monitor progress of students and take appropriate steps to ensure student success
  • Assist with developing proposals for new and renewed programs
  • May function as person in charge of the overall program several evenings per week and on specific community events
  • Develop opportunities for program improvement and expansion
  • Continuing Education for all programs operated by the Adult Education Division
  • Complete reports as requested

Student Services & Support

  • Develop and implement student recruitment and retention strategies
  • Oversee student assessment, placement, and progress monitoring systems
  • Coordinate support service connections including career counseling, academic advising, and transition planning
  • Maintain accurate student records and reporting systems

Partnership & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, employers, and social service agencies
  • Collaborate with workforce development boards and employment agencies
  • Coordinate with colleges and universities for seamless transitions and college agreements
  • Represent the program at community events and meetings
  • Preparing advertising copy for news media
  • Assist in preparing public relations releases and advertisement copy
  • Function as a speaker to community organizations and agencies
  • Contribute to the planning and preparation of brochures and posters
  • Prepare promotional and informational materials for special interest groups
  • Work and coordinate with community members to build public support for the program and create partnerships which will benefit students

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master's degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and/or related field
  • NYS SAS/SDL certification required

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in adult education, workforce development, or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or administrative experience
  • Demonstrated experience with diverse adult learner populations

Knowledge & Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of adult learning principles and best practices
  • Knowledge of federal and state adult education regulations (WIOA, EPE, etc.)
  • Proficiency interpreting data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Strong budget management and fiscal oversight capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with educational technology and student information systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with grants management
  • Knowledge of career and technical education programs
